about

The Ian Gomm Band live at the Bottom Line Club New York City October 13th 1979
The great majority of the rock groups with one‐syllable names that seem to be crawling out of the woodwork these days would give their string ties and sneakers to write just one song as melodious and memorable as almostanything by Ian Gomm. His tirst album, which comes after a long apprenticeship and associations that link him with Nick Lowe, the Rumour and other English rock favorites, is simply brimming with catchy hooks and lovingly crafted arrangements, and his show at the Bottom Line on Thursday night was a delight.
Mr. Gomm isn't a particularly outgoing performer, and his band is tight, but not exceptional. His performance was outstanding because of the sheer quality of his songs and arrangements. He also turns out to be a strong rockand‐roll singer, with a grainy, crying quality to his voice that's affecting but never overdone. A little more animation on stage would help, but Mr. Gomm already has a single entering the top 20 in the United States. It may be that if he simply keeps writing and singing such catchy, appealing pop music, the rest will take care of itself.
